August 19, 2007 Severe Weather Event
Overview
On Saturday, August 18, 2007, the remnants of Tropical Storm Erin brought severe weather to Central Oklahoma, including heavy rain, flooding, and tornadoes. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a flash flood warning for Oklahoma City and surrounding areas, and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) closed several roads due to flooding.
Impact
The storm caused widespread damage, including downed trees and power lines, and flooded homes and businesses. According to the NWS, the storm dropped more than 10 inches of rain in some areas, causing flash flooding. The flooding also caused several roads to be closed, including Interstate 40, which was closed for several hours.
The storm also spawned several tornadoes, including an EF2 tornado that touched down near Moore, Oklahoma. The tornado caused significant damage to homes and businesses, and several people were injured.
Response
Emergency responders from across the state responded to the storm, and the Oklahoma National Guard was activated to help with cleanup efforts. The American Red Cross also set up shelters for displaced residents.
